Generali: 3 factors to consider when adopting generative AI

This month’s guest article on generative AI comes from Emanuele Colonnella, Innovation Lead, Generali.

Guest perspective: Generali

Generative AI is grabbing everyone’s attention with its impressive ability to create new content, interact with complex data and summarise intricate documents, using just everyday language. It’s not only powerful, but it’s also ‘human’ (has it ever felt like you’re conversing with another person while using ChatGPT?) which makes it fit naturally into our daily work.

At Generali, we’re thrilled about the potential of Generative AI to empower our colleagues and distributors to better cater to our clients, and help us fulfil our ambition of becoming their ‘Lifetime Partners’.

From streamlining underwriting via summarising complex risk reports, to expediting claims with smart chatbots, from crafting engaging communications to personalising insurance products to each customer’s needs, the applications are boundless.

While today’s Generative AI is already powerful and maturing rapidly, it’s important to remember we’re still in the early stages of understanding and unlocking its full potential. As the technology advances, insurers need to be mindful of several factors:

1. Move quickly but cautiously, considering ethical implications and data security risks: striking a balance between clear guidelines (on what can/can’t be done) and continuous experimentation (fostering curiosity and innovation) is crucial.

2. Start with internal use cases, which serve as safe learning opportunities: consider how Generative AI could simplify navigating company data, both structured and unstructured. Data governance and breaking data silos are homework you need to do as the tech’s strength grows with data volume.

3. Keep the humans in the loop: maintaining oversight on ethical and reliability concerns is paramount. Additionally, human expertise remains indispensable, as technology becomes a commodity over time.

We’re firm believers in Generative AI’s capacity to transform our industry and we remain dedicated to leading the way responsibly, with integrity and vision. The possibilities are exciting, and with careful navigation, Generative AI will undoubtedly shape a better future for the insurance sector.
