About this webinar
Storm surge remains one of the hardest perils to underwrite with confidence. For many portfolios, the weakest link isn’t the hazard engine, it’s the data that goes into it.
Shorelines can move rapidly, coastal defences change and elevations shift. Yet much of the underlying shoreline and elevation data feeding models can be years, and 100s of meters, out of date. Different vendors can deliver conflicting surge depths in the same location, creating uncertainty in high-hazard zones, inconsistent pricing, and difficult conversations with underwriters, brokers, and boards.
Ocean Ledger focuses on the underlying coastal drivers of storm surge – shoreline position, erosion trends, bathymetry and natural/engineered defences – delivering up-to-date standardised, scalable data inputs to strengthen vendor and in-house models for complex coastlines. In this webinar, we explored how you can use these inputs alongside established models to reduce uncertainty, improve risk selection, and open up revenue where blanket pull-backs are leaving opportunity on the table.
Ocean Ledger also discussed a practical workflow they have developed with KatRisk, a global leader in climate catastrophe risk modelling, to help clients understand where their current cat models may be overestimating or underestimating the risk, how to make adjustments and evidence those decisions.
What we covered
- To what degree existing storm surge models are under- and overestimating the risk
- Where shoreline and elevation data create blind spots, and what “fit for purpose” inputs look like for coastal surge modelling
- How incorporating the historical and present-day data on shoreline erosion, coastal defences, and seabed changes significantly improves digital elevation model accuracy and vulnerability assumptions, including forecasting future inundation hotspots
- Apply a practical framework to validate vendor models, resolve conflicting vendor views and develop your own more accurate internal view of risk
- Explore a joint case study with KatRisk showing how Ocean Ledger insights can be integrated into underwriting, pricing and model review
Who should watch the webinar on demand?
Heads of Underwriting, Cat Managers and Modellers, Heads of Exposure/Risk Research, Data & Analytics leaders, private flood carriers and MGAs, E&S P&C writers, reinsurance brokers, and anyone responsible for model validation and coastal pricing. Also relevant for banks and other non-insurance financial institutions with coastal property exposure.
