Fathom makes UK flood catastrophe model free to access

Fathom has made the UK region of its Global Flood Cat model free to access, including for commercial use. Watch Fathom co-founder Andy Smith discuss the role of validation and transparency in flood modelling.

The UK region of Fathom’s Global Flood Cat model is now freely available, giving risk professionals another way to assess and compare flood risk.

Fathom has announced that the UK region of its Global Flood Cat model is available free of charge, including for commercial use. Reinsurers, insurers, brokers and financial institutions can request access through Oasis LMF, Moody’s Intelligent Risk Platform via Oasis SaaS and Verisk’s Model Exchange.

The release is intended to make it easier for organisations to incorporate another model into their view of UK flood risk. Fathom says Global Flood Cat is designed to expose uncertainty and allow users to examine the hazard and vulnerability science behind its results. The model has been evaluated by brokers, (re)insurers and Swiss Re, which acquired Fathom in 2023.

“Making the UK region of our flagship global model freely accessible moves multi-model views of risk from aspiration to reality,” said Oliver Wing, Chief Scientist and Product Officer at Fathom.

Fathom has supported the Oasis Loss Modelling Framework for several years, making its catastrophe models available through the framework since 2019. The UK release was announced as the catastrophe modelling community gathered for the Oasis Insight Conference Zurich 2026.

In an interview recorded alongside the announcement, Fathom co-founder Andy Smith spoke to InsTech’s Matthew Grant about the importance of validation and transparency when choosing a flood model. He also discussed how AI is helping to improve modelling inputs and why Fathom wants more organisations to put its model to use.
