Decerto: intuitive insurance software

InsTech’s Ali Smedley recently sat down with Marcin Nowak, Board Member at Decerto (and part-time hot air balloon pilot), to learn about the company’s software, including its proprietary business rules engine, and plans for expansion into the global market.

Decerto develops customised software for insurers and brokers. The organisation provides its solutions to 80% of the Polish insurance market — and is looking to expand further.

As well as its bespoke solutions, Decerto offers a range of off-the-shelf software products. The company’s expertise is mainly within sales, underwriting and claims handling. It has also helped insurers to deploy policy administration systems.

A solution for brokers

Decerto’s core solution is Agent Portal, which is a software offering specifically designed for insurance agents. It integrates all necessary functionalities to streamline workflows, enhance customer interactions and boost sales performance.

The solution handles both P&C and L&H business. Marcin explained some of the other benefits of its Agent Portal:

“What we hear a lot from our clients is that the solution is very intuitive. Compared to other software that they’ve used, when trying Agent Portal for the first time they almost immediately understand how to use it. This is because we’ve spent a lot of time speaking with brokers to understand what they want out of a system.”

Decerto has also invested time into its data enrichment capabilities. This means a broker can input just a few pieces of information about the end client which will then be enriched by internal and third-party databases.

Client data — all in one place

Marcin went on to explain what a broker sees when they use Agent Portal:

“When they log in, they are greeted by a welcome page that outlines all of their tasks for the day. This includes things like renewals and payments that are due.

“They also see a search bar, which allows them to search using any piece of client information, such as a vehicle registration plate number. This will then show all information about that client.”

Marcin highlighted that with most companies, client data tends to be fragmented and difficult to see all in one place.

“But with Agent Portal, brokers can immediately see which insurance products a certain client has with them. For example, the client may have coverage for their vehicle and property, but not life insurance. Brokers can use this information to identify potential upsell opportunities.”

A proprietary pricing and rules engine

Decerto’s pricing engine can be used within Agent Portal or as a standalone product (Higson). The company has aimed to make the tool as easy to use as possible.

“If a user wants to adjust the premium for a certain product, they can go into the structure of that product, find the attributes for the premium and quickly make the change. Our clients tell us that this process is particularly easy to navigate.”

Marcin explained that another reason why Decerto’s pricing engine appeals to its users is due to its reliance on decision tables. These are very similar to what is used in Excel, which means users are already familiar with the structure and can quickly understand how to use it.

Executing customised pricing models

Traditionally, GLM (generalised linear model) is the statistical method that insurers have used to determine the pricing of their policies. But more and more insurers are attempting to further customise their pricing models.

Companies have large amounts of data that they can analyse to create custom pricing models. Once they have applied machine learning to it to create their model, they are often then left with the issue of execution.

This is where Decerto steps in. We help insurance companies to deploy and run the custom models that they have created. Our software also allows insurers to adjust their premiums daily. We keep track of all this information, so if a regulator asks what the premium was on a certain day and why, we can explain it.

Partnering to deliver insurance software

As well as working directly with insurers and brokers, Decerto has also worked with other technology companies. This includes insurance software provider Send.

“Send was looking for a business rules engine (BRE) and found us. Our collaboration has evolved into a long-term partnership. We have the pleasure of working with them on the development of their insurance software solutions, as well as implementing software for our mutual clients.”

Decerto has recently supported Send to deliver an underwriting workbench to a major US-based MGU.

At Decerto, we have learnt so much through this partnership. Our expertise has traditionally been within P&C and L&H lines of business, but Send offers solutions to the corporate and specialty markets. Through our work with them, we have gained a lot of knowledge.

Expanding beyond Poland – it’s already happening!

Decerto is keen to grow its offering — both through new partnership and geographic expansion.

“Long-term relationships are really important to us. We started the company 18 years ago, and we have some clients that have been with us for 16 years. When we are looking to partner or work with new clients, we want to ensure it is a long-lasting relationship.”

“We are particularly looking to expand within the US and UK market. For potential clients or partners who are interested in learning more about Decerto’s solutions, you can reach out to me on LinkedIn.”
