Constraint inspires creativity – The Parametric Post Issue 82

The Parametric Post, our quarterly newsletter dedicated to parametric insurance.

Thought for the day… constraint inspires creativity

Two of the key drivers for the success of parametric triggers are the availability and the reliability of the data that defines the index and can be relied upon to activate a trigger. There has for a long time been a tension between using publicly available and free data compared to data that must be licensed. Free data can be turned off at any time, whereas licensed data is typically contractually more reliable and available.

This choice of what to use for the creators and issuers of parametric insurance has become even harder in today’s world. Emerging economies often have fewer options for detailed data and the US, once a source of both reliable and free data is threatening to turn off the taps or at least restrict the flow of data from sources such as USGS.

Fortunately, sources are becoming available, or to borrow from the founder of Twitter/X Jack Dorsey, “constraint inspires creativity”, and new companies are starting to emerge to provide the alternative data solutions… albeit at a price.

Safehub is back in the news, and if you missed or want a refresh on how Safehub is complementing the USGS reporting on earthquakes and working with the non-profit GEM (Global Earthquake Model), then we strongly recommend our webinar on that topic, recorded earlier this year, which is highly informative and a great introduction to this topic.
