Your top 15 podcast guests – Jan 2021

Wondering what’s happening at leading insurers, challenger brokers, new & established technology companies, and investors?

Released every Sunday, Matthew Grant talks to those driving innovation on the InsTech London podcast. Discover what the real influencers are thinking, the lessons for building a business and who to partner with to build great companies around the world.

With 19 more episodes released since our last quarterly leaderboard, and our older episodes continuing to prove to be very popular, it’s no surprise that we are seeing a bit of a shake-up in the leaderboard this quarter – but with some old favourites still in the running.

“a shake-up in the leaderboard this quarter”

Matthew’s guide to the leaders and newcomers is below, with some feedback from our listeners.

If you prefer words to sound or want a reminder of what was discussed after you’ve listened to a podcast, look out for the Q & A write up for most episodes on the InsTech London podcast page.

The algorithmic syndicate

Our interview with James Birch and Mark Allan, Episode 84, continues to generate a lot of interest around Brit’s algorithmic syndicate and is still number one – maybe not surprising given that Ki was amongst the largest investments rounds in the UK last year with $500m.

“I really value your podcast”

The challenger broker

Barnaby Rugge-Price has been promoted to the role of Chairman of Howden Broking Group & Hyperion X since we spoke to him in his role of CEO of Hyperion X for Episode 91 in July. Barnaby holds his place at Number 2.

The interest in Hyperion is evidence of the rise of the challenger brokers, powered by technology and innovation, as Riskbook Co-founder Ben Rose mentioned when contributing to our predictions for 2021.

The technology platform provider

Our first brand new entry for this quarter is Paul Mang on Episode 110 entering in straight to Number 3. Today he is Chief Innovation Officer at Guidewire. Paul brings a breadth of experience, including in his prior role at Aon and he draws some interesting parallels between pharma, biotech and insurance.

“The InsTech London Podcast has replaced my daily dose of BBC news”

The social purpose parametric offering

Kate Stillwell, CEO and founder of Jumpstart, Episode 104 enters directly in at Number 5. I’m not allowed to have favourites, but if I did, this would be one of them – such a great story about how Kate built this parametric business to provide earthquake top-up cover for California residents.

The fraud detector

Another new entrant at Number 6. His first podcast, but bringing 14 years of experience and with 184 clients (and counting) is Netherlands-based Jeroen Morrenhof, CEO and founder of Friss.

Jeroen talks on Episode 105 about building the business, and the range of techniques the company has developed to identify fraud at the point of underwriting and claims.

“I’m really enjoying the podcasts, some great questions and insights”

The insurtech investor

Stephen Brittain, co-founder at Insurtech Gateway got up early to talk to me for Episode 102 and enters our leaderboard at Number 9.

There’s something for everyone in this one as we learn about what investors look for in companies, why larger insurers are finding alternatives to in-house innovation and the themes to look out for in the year ahead.

The global reinsurer

We’ve been delighted to welcome Swiss Re as a corporate member and Gianni Biason, Head Property & Specialty Solutions, explains on Episode 109 where this large global reinsurer is focusing and how it manages internal and external innovation. Definitely a company to watch.

Ruta Mikiskaite gave us some more details around the company’s innovation strategy when we interviewed her in September.

“I am an avid listener of your podcast”

The agile developer

Genasys has been building technology for insurers in South Africa for many years and has been very busy in the last couple of years since Andre Symes opened up the London office.

Coming in straight to Number 14, Andre explains how to build and deploy technology fast, cheaply and effectively on Episode 106.

The network protector

Fresh out of the Lloyd’s Lab, Israel and US-based Parametrix Insurance has also moved fast to deploy its network downtime insurance product. Neta Rozy, CTO and Co-founder, explains in Episode 115 how the company has been able to model, track and offer parametric protection for failure of all major network providers.

Some great lessons in this one whether you are building, using or investing in an early stage, technology-enabled business.

“I’ve been really enjoying the podcasts”

And so much more…

You can listen to all our episodes on our dedicated podcast page or through the popular podcast channels such as Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

No doubt we’ll be seeing another re-jig of the leaderboard in April. Recent guests already performing well include Parul Kaul-Green from Axa XL; Rod Fox, CEO of TigerRisk; Mark Varley of Addresscloud; Paul Prendergast of Blink Parametric, Robin Roberson of Claim Central Consolidated and Mark Cunningham of WhenFresh.

Finally – to all our fans out there – or anyone else that fancies helping to promote the podcast. If you like what you hearing and you’re an iPhone user, it would be great if you can scroll down the Instech London podcast page and say a few words in the review and give us a score – it helps further spread the word.

In the meantime, please tell us what you think, what is missing and share this with your friends and competitors below.
